As reserve, I was called up to compete on friday afternoon after Mhairi was suffering with illness. I was delighted to go as I knew I was hitting good form in training and was looking forward making it all count in comeptition.
Qualification was fairly comfortable. A fairly good shoot was let down by a couple of poor shots but a solid score of 173 was a decent outcome. Fencing was hot!!! It was well over 35degrees outside but in the small fencing hall with no air conditioning it was more like 40degrees. The heat was difficult to overcome but I managed to 16victories and 12defeats giving me a points score of 904. Swimming was disappointing, achieving a time of 2.22 but I but that down in part to the heat we'd endured during the fencing. I had a very comfortable run of 11.45, crossing the line in 5th place with 18 to qualify.
Thankfully the weather wasn't so hot for the day of the final. I was positive going into the shooting, knowing what mistakes I'd made in the semi final I was determined not to make them a second time round. My determination was good and I finished the shoot with a big smile on my face scoring 182. I had a desperate start to the fencing, waiting until the 4th round to score my first hit. Once I got off the mark I fenced very well, it's just a shame it took a while to get into it. I finished with 19victories and 17defeats giving a points score of 880. Swimming was disappointing once again only recording a time of 2.22.
It took a while to get to the riding venue so we all had a bit of a rest on the bus. The riding arena was a grassy field and had much more of a cross country feel to it than a well kept riding school. The course was fairly straight forward however the undulating ground was a cause for concern. My horse had gone clear in the test round so there was no doubt that it was capable of the job. The warm up was eventful with various other riders causing unwelcome amounts of chaos for me to deal with. The warm up was going well and I was begining to relax until we jumped a fairly big spread. On landing my horse tripped and then stumbled and I went flying face down into the sand. After a quick splash of water on my face (c/o Istvan) I was launched back on my horse to continue things. Once in the ring my horse was much speedier and it took me a few jumps to adjust. I knocked down 5 poles during the course but after my experience at Millfiled I was happy to make it round.
I started the run in 10th position and made up ground on some of the runners ahead of me. Unfortunately I hadn't given myself enough of a head start against Georgina and she came breezing past me within the first 400m, going on to produce the fastest run of the day and win the bronze medal. I produced a time of 10.48 to finish in 8th position overall. I was really happy, 8th place is my highest world cup finish to date. |
